Clone Space for Confluence
Copies an entire Confluence Cloud space: pages, hierarchy, attachments, labels, space permissions, and internal links repointed to the new space.
Copying a space
- Open the space you want to copy.
- In the sidebar, under Space apps, click Clone Space.
- Read the report. Nothing has been written yet.
- Optionally type a name and a space key for the new space. Leave the key blank and one will be chosen for you.
- Click Copy.
The copy runs in the background. You can close the page and come back; progress is saved.
The report, before anything is written
Opening the app runs a read-only check against the space and reports:
- how many current pages there are
- how many are top level, and how deep the hierarchy goes
- how many pages would be skipped, and why
- how many permission assignments exist on the space
This is free and always will be, in every licence state. It changes nothing. If the numbers are not what you expected, that is the point of running it.
What gets copied
| Pages | Every current page, in the same hierarchy |
|---|---|
| Internal links | Links and macro references repointed to the new space. Confluence does not do this natively at any plan level |
| Space permissions | The source space's access configuration is requested on the new space, on any Confluence plan |
| Attachments | Copied with their pages, up to 30 MB each |
| Embedded images | Copied, and the reference in the page body is repointed |
| Labels | Copied with their pages |
What does not get copied
| Page comments | Not copied in this version |
|---|---|
| Version history | Confluence does not expose page history for copying. Copied pages start at version 1 |
| Drafts, archived and trashed pages | Only current pages are copied |
| Pages you cannot see | The page list is built as you, so a page restricted from you is never read and never copied |
Permissions you need
Two, both yours rather than the app's:
- Permission to view the source space. Checked before anything starts.
- Permission to create a space. Copying a space makes a new one. If your Confluence administrator has not granted you the "Create space" global permission, the app will tell you so, and the fix is a permission change rather than anything in the app.
The app cannot delete anything. It holds no delete permission of any kind: not spaces, not pages, not attachments, not labels. It also never modifies the source space. The only pages it ever edits are ones it created itself, in the new space, while repointing links.
If a copy stops
Large copies can be interrupted. The app is built for this.
- It restarts itself. A check runs every few minutes and resumes a stalled copy from where it stopped.
- You can restart it yourself with the Resume now button rather than waiting.
- It gives up honestly. After several attempts it stops and says why, rather than sitting at a progress bar that never moves.
There is no rollback, deliberately. Rolling back would mean deleting what was already created, which would mean asking you for delete permission over your whole Confluence site. That is not a trade worth making for a tool whose job is to not lose things. If a copy fails and you would rather start over, delete the new space yourself: it is one action in Confluence, and the original was never touched.
Limits
| Attachment size | 30 MB per file. Larger files are skipped and listed in the completion report |
|---|---|
| Space size | The report warns above 2,000 pages. Larger spaces work but take longer and lean on the resume mechanism |
| Space key | Keys are unique per site. If the obvious key is taken, the app tries a few alternatives before asking you |
Where your data goes
Nowhere. The app is built on Atlassian Forge and runs on Atlassian-hosted compute, with its small amount of state in Atlassian's own storage inside your site. There are no third-party services, no sub-processors, nothing sent to AI models, and no outbound network calls of any kind.
It qualifies for Atlassian's Runs on Atlassian programme, which requires exactly that and is verified by Atlassian rather than claimed by us. Details in the privacy policy.
Licensing
Checking a space is free, in every licence state. Running the copy needs an active subscription or trial. Free for up to ten users.
